Latvia will limit the import of books from Russia and Belarus

The Latvian Seimas has banned the import of a number of goods of Russian and Belarusian origin. The list of products subject to restrictions will include books, periodicals, video games, toys, sporting goods, clothing and shoes.
As the Latvian authorities note, the final list of goods will be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. Restrictions will apply not only to direct supplies from Russia and Belarus, but also to imports through third countries. At the same time, the transit of such goods through the territory of Latvia to other states of the European Union will remain.
For the book industry, this decision means a further reduction in the official distribution channels of Russian publications in the Baltic countries. If previously restrictions affected mainly certain categories of products within the framework of EU sanctions policy, now we are talking about a national ban that applies to a wider range of consumer goods.
Latvian authorities explain the initiative by the desire to reduce economic ties with Russia and Belarus, as well as limit the distribution of products that, according to the government, can be used for state propaganda purposes. The law was passed by the Sejm on July 23 under an expedited procedure and will remain in effect until at least July 1, 2027.
